Services Info

Firewalls can be either a hardware appliance or a piece of software which runs on a machine. So, the answer is both.

Not helpful, I know.

But the main difference between the two is this:

  • Software firewalls tend to protect the individual machine it’s installed upon, typically a laptop or PC
  • Hardware firewalls usually protect many machines or an entire network.

That’s hard to say. If you’ll be storing a lot of data, or large data files (e.g., videos, audio files, etc.), you’ll want to consider focusing on a Cloud storage solution that has cost effective options for large amounts of data storage. This way, you’re never worried about how many terabytes you’ve used or how many gigabytes you have left. If the business need is focused on mobility, then you’ll want to consider the options that support BYOD. If high availability is the primary focus, you’ll want to consider the Cloud provider’s ability to utilize data center redundancy.

All servers connected to the Internet are assigned a unique IP address so they can be properly located. The Domain Name System, or DNS, is a network of databases spread throughout the Internet that is responsible for routing easy-to-remember text-based domain names to their corresponding numeric IP Addresses.

In a traditional security system, data is transmitted through a cable to a DVR (digital video recorder). With an IP camera, the Internet is used to transmit digital video. The unit contains everything it needs to do this. It’s connected to your network much like other external IT equipment like a printer. To store video, your IP camera may contain storage in-unit or it may transmit video to a device also connected to the network to be stored, also known as a network video recorder (NVR). Digital cameras and IP cameras capture images the same way, although the transmission method is different. Your quality won’t be compromised with an IP camera—in fact, the resolution is better.

Emergency Questions

You can use either a physical router for your network (wired) or a WiFi connection (wireless). Wired networks tend to be more secure and reliable, although WiFi is easier, it leads to the increased need for security. Surveillance Secure can help you encrypt these networks and customize a wireless network to minimize chances of any problems with a WiFi setup. You may also choose to use a cellular network, which tends to be safer than WiFi, but also slower. Surveillance Secure can discuss your options with you to determine which one would be best for your custom setup and security needs.

If you have data spread across multiple devices without a single backup location, then YES, you really do need a NAS drive. As it will make backing up with multiple devices easier, more automated and reliable.

If you are a business with large amounts of data that needs to be accessible quickly, across multiple machines or outside your office environment for off-site staff or clients, then Yes you need a NAS.

If you want your internet accessible data to be 100% inaccessible when needed (for security) and are considering a Cloud provider or a NAS, BUY A NAS!!! It is cheaper in the long run and can have individual and bespoke security measures.

A server at home is a network attached storage device (NAS) that is like a computer but with the emphasis on storage space. They can be purchased for as little as £100 and mean all your data can be accessed, used and backup’ed to and from over the internet or your home network (WiFi etc). Bigger and more expensive home servers can do more, such as virtual computers, surveillance recording and multimedia access.
